Kyoto Highlights Day Tour
Iconic Temples, Sacred Shrines & Hidden Corners
Begin your day at the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s most visited spiritual sites. Famous for its thousands of vibrant vermillion torii gates that wind through Mt. Inari’s slopes, walking through this tunnel of red is an unforgettable, almost otherworldly experience. Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, the shrine has long been popular with merchants and businesspeople seeking fortune.
From the main hall, you’ll pass through the famed torii tunnel and take in the serene surroundings of the mountain shrine complex, which stretches across Mt. Inari's 233-meter peak.
Next, visit the Sanjusangendo Temple, a wooden architectural marvel rebuilt a century after a devastating fire. Measuring 120 meters, it is the longest wooden building in Japan, and home to an awe-inspiring collection of 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist deity of mercy.
Continue to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a treasured UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a hillside with panoramic views of Kyoto, the temple is famous for its dramatic wooden stage, built entirely without nails. Dedicated to Kannon, it is a place of wish-making—especially beloved by women praying for safe childbirth.
In the afternoon, explore the breathtaking Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). Clad entirely in gold leaf, this glittering Zen temple stands beside a tranquil reflecting pond. Built by a powerful warlord, its story and dazzling beauty make it one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan—stunning in every season.
Your final stop is the historic Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to scholarship and learning. Here, students buy lucky pencils in hopes of academic success. Beyond the shrine, explore Kamishichiken, Kyoto’s oldest geisha district. Less touristy than Gion, this charming “flower town” was born from the timber salvaged after a fire in 1444, used to build teahouses that still line the streets today.
At the end of this full and enriching day, your guide will escort you back to Otsu.
